Diamond in the rough.
I have lived in the area for 7 years and have driven by nick's Diner so many times, and unfortunately it has taken me this long to stop in. I tried Nicks a few weeks back on my way out for a motorcycle ride and boy was it good. So I decided to stop in again this morning and delicious again.
You get the old school diner feel that you had when you were a kid mixed with a staff that makes you feel like you are family. It's rare these days to find a good mix of service, quality and atmosphere.
The new trend in Denver seems to be, open a restaurant and treat your customers like you are doing them a favor by serving you. Well not at Nicks every seems to enjoy their jobs and genuinely care about your experience. SCORE 1 for Nicks, my new favorite breakfast spot!!! -

The three stars were for the food. Very mediocre at best and definitely not worth raving about. The staff are hands down 5 stars. Very friendly and attentive until our waitress' boyfriend came in with their kids and seemed to have a short temper as she catered to him. I watched as he grabbed their daughter like a rag doll, took her outside and literally pushed the toddler into the back of a van because it seems she annoyed him at some point. After that it just felt awkward eating and our waitress' demeanor was completely different after he had come in and was not attentive after that. So overall, meh.

I love this place, the food is really good and the staff is friendly. It has that old time DENVER diner feel.

I love this local joint! It's 'greasy spoon' for sure, but the food is quality, you get huge portions for a really low price, everything is fresh and the service is always super friendly and fun.
We've started using the term ' blunch' for Sunday trips to Nicks. It's not a brunch- no mimosas or bloodies or fancy breakfast foods. Just your typical diner flair with some additional Mexican options. This is our go to spot when we want brunch but don't want to deal with the waits everywhere else.
Service:
I love the servers here. It's not white glove service, it's a diner after all, but everyone is super friendly. I've never had a long wait for something or trouble getting more coffee or hot sauce. Even on the most crowded days every server gives you a warm smile and becomes your friend for the time you're there.
Food:
I've never had something here that seems like it came out of the freezer (ok except maybe French fries). You can tell everything is made fresh. There's no special spin or amazing culinary experience happening with the food- nothing you probably haven't had before, but it's reliable good food. Fantastic hangover food. Their lunch is great too. I actually crave their Greek salad with grilled chicken.
Only negative note I'll give on food, if you can call this a negative: their pancakes for whatever reason get pretty chewy once they've been allowed to sit. So if you're like me and love getting a pancake to eat as dessert after your eggs, order it mid meal. When it comes out it is tasty (not great) but once It cools it's a pretty terrible pancake.
Atmosphere:
Again- this is a diner. It's clean, looks like a cool old diner. The bar is neat, very vintage looking but not in a poppy 50's way, more like a dingy 70's- like somewhere your grandpa would have sat to have coffee and a smoke. It's clean though. I don't mean that as a bad thing.
People do bring their kids here. We have never been here and not had a loud toddler or crying baby. This is like nails on a chalkboard to me, but I can't hold that against Nicks. As I keep saying, it's a diner and I suppose parents need to eat too! Just be aware that it is very child friendly - good for the parents, bad if you have a killer hangover. -

Nick's delivers in every category you would want a diner to. It's friendly, they have good food, and the portions are generous.
This has quickly become our go to breakfast spot in the neighborhood. Service is always fast and efficient, and there are quite a few regulars which is also a staple of a good diner.
The omelettes are huge, and so are the burritos. The prices are definitely reasonable making this a no brainier any time we don't feel like cooking breakfast.
Definitely try the pancakes. They are really good!!
